Cool Beach Hotel

where the ocean starts at your doorstep

Galle Road runs past the front gate and the Indian Ocean fills everything behind it. Cool Beach Hotel sits on the quieter stretch of coast at Akurala, a little north of central Hikkaduwa, close enough for a day trip and far enough that the loudest thing after dark is the surf. Rooms face the water, breakfast waits until you are ready, and the family who runs the place will have learned your name before the first morning is over.

The sand is part of the property

A private beach area, garden and terrace run straight from the building down to the shoreline, so swimming never involves a car or a plan.

Every room looks at the water

The Double Room with Balcony and Sea View comes with a queen bed, air conditioning, a refrigerator and a balcony that faces the ocean.

Someone is always at the desk

The front desk is staffed 24 hours, so late arrivals, early trains and last-minute questions are all easy to sort out in person.

Wake up close enough to hear the water

Ocean-view guest room with a wide balcony over the water

Accommodation here is kept simple, comfortable and closely tied to the coast rather than dressed up for a brochure. Rooms come with comfortable bedding, air conditioning, a private bathroom, practical furnishings and a refrigerator, and sea-facing rooms add a private balcony where you can stand with a coffee and watch the day arrive over the water.

The room type is a Double Room with Balcony and Sea View, furnished with one queen bed. All rooms are non-smoking and serviced by daily housekeeping, and room service is available whenever you would rather eat upstairs with the balcony door open than come down to the restaurant.

Mornings tend to start slowly. Doors open onto the balcony, the sea sets the soundtrack, and nobody is in a hurry to move you along.

Sun loungers under the palms on the quiet beach beside the hotel

From the pool deck to the shoreline in a minute

The property sits directly on the beachfront, with a private beach area and garden and terrace spaces that run towards the sand. An outdoor swimming pool looks out over the coast, which means you can swim laps, dry off in the sun and walk down to the water without ever changing plans or leaving the grounds.

The garden swings are where afternoons disappear

In the beachside garden, hanging chairs and swings face the ocean. They are the kind of spot where an hour goes missing without much effort, particularly in the late afternoon when the light softens over the water and the heat finally lets go. Bring a book if you like, though most people end up just watching the surf come in and going back for another swim instead.

Towels, shade and a short walk to the sand are all part of the day. The stretch of beach in front of the hotel stays far quieter than the busier tourist strips closer to central Hikkaduwa.

Fresh cooking, sea air and no rush to finish

The on-site restaurant is family friendly and serves Asian cuisine, with vegetarian options available. There is a bar for the end of the day, and breakfast is served for guests staying at the hotel, usually somewhere between a swim and whatever the rest of the morning turns into.

Meals are cooked fresh to order rather than pulled from a long list of specialities. Tell the kitchen what you feel like eating and they will do their best to make it happen, which is how most of the good meals here get decided. Room service is available if you would rather eat with your balcony door open.

Dinner tends to run late here, because nobody minds if you sit at the table long after the plates have gone back to the kitchen.

Guests relaxing in the oceanfront pool with staff nearby

Small enough that you are recognised by the second morning

Cool Beach Hotel is run as a family place rather than an operation, and it shows in the small things: the attentive, friendly welcome from the owner and the staff, the willingness to help with whatever the day needs, and the habit of pointing out where the water is calmest before you have to ask. Arranging a tuk-tuk, sorting a train time or finding a plate of something at an odd hour rarely takes more than a conversation at the desk.

Most people remember the beachfront and the ocean views. What tends to bring them back is the sense that somebody here is genuinely glad they came. With the front desk staffed around the clock, there is always a person to ask rather than a number to call.

A little more than a beach day, if you want it

Beach access is a few steps from the door and plenty of guests never plan anything more complicated than that. When you do feel like moving, cycling along the coast road is the easiest start, and a tour or class about local culture gives the area some context beyond the shoreline. Akurala railway station is close by, so a slow coastal train south towards Galle makes an easy day out and back.

Snorkeling, diving and fishing can be arranged through the hotel, along with bicycle rental and massage. All of these carry an additional charge and are not included in the stay. A tour desk, car rental and currency exchange are on site, and shuttle service and airport shuttle are available for an additional charge. Laundry, ironing and dry-cleaning can also be arranged, with charges where applicable.

Not sure what fits your days here? Get in touch before you arrive, or reserve your room and work out the rest with the desk once you are settled in.

Hikkaduwa town, its coral sanctuary and the surf breaks are a short ride down Galle Road, while Akurala keeps its evenings quiet and its beach mostly to the people staying on it.

The quieter side of this coastline

Akurala is the part of the southwest coast that most itineraries drive past. Galle Road runs past the door, so Hikkaduwa and the wider coastline stay within easy reach, while the evenings here belong to the sea rather than the traffic. Akurala railway station is nearby, which makes coastal train trips a simple thing to organise on the morning you feel like going.
